‘What’s the matter with it?’ Mr. Richards said. The man did not answer. Of course Mr. Richards thought that the man must be deaf and that his hearing-aid must be faulty, so he said again, more loudly, ‘What’s wrong with your hearing-aid, sir?’ Again the man said nothing, so Mr. Richards shouted his question again as loudly as he could.

The man then took a pen and a piece of paper and wrote: ‘It isn’t necessary to shout when you’re speaking to me. My ears are as good as yours. This hearing-aid is my wife’s, not mine. I’ve just had a throat operation, and my problem is not that I can’t hear, but that I can’t speak.’

                آقای ریچاردز در مغازه ای که سمعک ها را تعمیر شست و شو و یا میفروخت کار میکرد. روزی آقای محترم و با شخصیتی وارد مغازه شد و بر روی(میز)مقابل آقای ریبچاردز  یک سمعک بدون گفتن حرفی گذاشت.

آقای ریچاردز گفت:(( مشکلش چیه؟)) مرد جوابی نداد. قطعا آقای ریچاردز فک کرد که مرد ناشنوا باشد و این سمعک باید خراب باشد، پس او بلندتر گفت:(( مشکلش چیه؟!!!!!))و دوباره مرد جوابی نداد پس آقای ریچاردز سوالش را به قدری که توان داشت فریاد زد.

مرد سپس خودکاری برداشت و روی تکه ای از کاغذ نوشت:(( نیاز نیست داد بزنی وقتی داری صحبت میکنی. گوشای من به همون اندازه گوشای تو خوبند. این سمعک همسرم است نه من. من اخیرا یک جراحی گلو داشتم و مشکلم نشنیدن نیست حرف نزدنه.))

Mr. Williams was a gardener and a very good one too. Last year he came to work for Mrs. Elphinstone, who was old, fat and rich.
She knew nothing about gardens, but thought that she knew a lot, and was always interfering. One day Mr. Williams got angry with Mrs. Elphinstone and called her an elephant. She did not like that at all, so she went to a lawyer, and a few months later Mr. Williams was in court, accused of calling Mrs. Elphinstone an elephant. The magistrate found Mr. Williams guilty, so Mr. Williams said to him, 'Does that mean that I am not allowed to call this lady an elephant anymore?'
'That is quite correct,' the magistrate answered.
'And am I allowed to call an elephant lady?' the gardener asked.
'Yes, certainly,' the magistrate answered.
Mr. Williams looked at Mrs. Elphinstone and said, 'Goodbye, lady.'

کلمات مهم:

Garden(noun)= باغچه = Plot              Garden(verb)= باغبانی کردن = Cultivate         

کلمه one   با اینکه یک عدد است(عدد یک) اما گاهی نیز به معنای اشاره ای استفاده میشود که در ترجمه به معنای یکی از آنها، و یا آن می باشد.

آقای ویلیامز یک باغبان بود و از خبره های این کار بود. سال پیش او برای خانم الفی استون که خانمی پیر، چاق و پولدار بود کار می کرد. خانم الفین استون هیچ چیز درباره باغبانی نمی دانشت اما با خودش فکر میکرد در این کار استاد است ، و همیشه در کار اقای ویلیامز دخالت میکرد. یک روز آقای ویلیامز از دستش عصبانی شده بود و او را فیل خطاب کرد. او از این کارآقای ویلیامز اصلا خوشش نیامد و به وکیل مراجعه کرد، و چند ماه بعد آقای ویلیامز به دادگاه به اتهام توهین به خانم الفین استون با گفتن فیل به او فرا خوانده شد. دادستان آقای ویلیامز را خطاکار تشخیص داد پس اقای ویلیامز به دادستان گفت :(( ایا این به این منظور است که من اجازه ندارم دیگه به این خانم بگم فیل؟))

داستان جواب داد:(( این کاملا درست است.))

آقای ویلیامز گفت:((  و آیا من اجازه دارم یک فیل را خانم صدا بزنم؟))

دادستان گفت:(( بله دقیقا))

آقای ویلیامز به خانم الفین استون نگاه کرد و گفت:(( خداحافظ خانم))
